It has been 18 days since the fatal stabbing of their son Mackenzie Schilling, 22, by Andrew James Kohl, 20, in a parking lot in Kohl’s department store in Des Moines. Nearly nine months after the attack, his parents, Mike and Denise Schilling, are still reeling from their son’s death.

MACKENZIE SCHILLING

The victim: Mackenzie Schilling was a young man like any other college student, with a bright future ahead of him. But after he was attacked and found dead in a parking lot in Des Moines, he will never get to know his future.

The mother: Mackenzie was a fun-loving young man who loved sports, animals and cooking.

The father: An outgoing young man who loved his family.

The future: Instead, they have become the main caregivers for his two young daughters, Taylor and Grace.

The pain: Every day, his parents try to come to terms with the fact that Mackenzie is gone.

“We do not know why it happened. We do not know what happened,” Mike Schilling said in an interview with the Register. “We don’t have anything but our prayers and our faith.”

“My heart is broken. It’s heartbreaking,” Denise Schilling said.
