Shonda Rhimes says a room of “old men” said to her, “Nobody was going to watch this show”

“Grey’s Anatomy” may be the most popular scripted show in the history of television. Yet when Shonda Rhimes arrived on the set of the hit TV medical drama back in December, she found a room of “old men” who said they wouldn’t watch the show.

“They weren’t interested in changing anything,” Rhimes tells HollywoodLife.com during a sit-down interview. “But it really had nothing to do with anything and everything to do with that room of ‘old men’ – where does that come from?”

The Emmy-winning executive producer is in L.A. because she is promoting the premiere of her new show, “How I Met Your Mother.” But she admits it’s just a coincidence that the “Grey’s Anatomy” cast is here.

“I could have gone to Hollywood with a different cast,” Rhimes admits. “It was the timing that I could go to the premiere of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and come to the premiere of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ which I’ve been asked to do.”

The “Grey’s Anatomy” premiere is tonight (April 5) at 8 p.m. (Fox) and the show will return on April 27 at 8 p.m. (Fox).

Rhimes was on the set with her “How I Met Your Mother” co-stars Barney, Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Gad, Cobie Smulders and Neil Price. It was the first time they had all been on a single set, and it was very unusual.
