Spanish bishop stripped of post after marrying erotica author

A Spanish bishop stripped of his authority after marrying an erotica author has lost his place on the church’s top ranking religious court, local media reported. Bishop Ángel Barajas, who married his literary romance lover in 2017, was replaced by local priest Carlos Delgado for standing before the bench three times after failing to appear.

He had been due to appeal, but will no longer have his chance due to the “very serious misconduct” which was brought to the attention of the archbishop, Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, it said. On September 25, Barajas said in a tweet that his wife was pregnant, but failed to mention the identity of his partner, Galicia journalist Marta Romero.

The case in Galicia has been a point of intense public debate in Spain after local church leaders declared that Barajas, as a bishop, could not marry without their consent. Romero defended her spouse and argued that her relationship with the bishop was the result of a clerical arrangement, it said.
